Did you know that disposable gloves had their origin in a love story?
In 1889, a head nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore (USA) named Caroline Hampton developed eczema on her
hands due to contact with mercuric chloride during aseptic procedures. This prompted her fiancé, Dr. William S.
Halsted, the hospital's chief surgeon, to make a mold of Caroline's hands to send to the Goodyear Rubber Company for
the manufacture of plastic gloves. They were resistant to the heat and chemicals that had caused the reaction.
Five years later and following the gloves success, sterile medical gloves were introduced at Johns Hopkins Hospital
in 1894.
In 1991, Best Manufacturing (acquired by SHOWA in 2007) was the first to bring out the first disposable nitrile glove
to help those with both known and unknown allergies to latex.
Advantages of nitrile gloves, the alternative to latex and vinyl
Disposable gloves, as a general rule, are usually made of vinyl, latex, nitrile or polyethylene among others. To
facilitate their application, powder (usually composed of corn starch) is used as a lubricant. However, it has been
shown that it can cause skin irritation or allergies after prolonged exposure.
In order to avoid this, powder-free nitrile gloves are the perfect alternative due to their synthetic composition,
which gives them greater resistance without detracting from their sensitivity.
Among all the benefits of nitrile gloves we can highlight:
-
They have great chemical resistance: Maximum hand protection thanks to being resistant to
the penetration of chemicals and viruses.
-
Perfect fit: The gloves fit perfectly to the hand, ensuring greater safety and helping to
perform tasks comfortably.
-
Low friction resistance: As they are flexible, they are easy to put on and take off without
the use of powders or lubricants.
-
Accelerator free, avoiding type IV allergies.
-
Hypoallergenic: They do not cause allergic reactions, hypersensitivity or irritation
problems.
Due to all their benefits, nitrile disposable gloves have become popular in industries such as food, chemical and
healthcare.
Within the Showa range of nitrile gloves there are different types. We must take into account the characteristics and
qualities of each glove, to see which one is the most suitable for our type of work and to obtain the
food-virus-chemical certifications.
Showa biodegradable nitrile gloves: High quality and resistance
Today we would like to highlight three models of nitrile gloves that feature Eco Best Technology® (EBT), a
biodegradable material that provides the same performance and resistance as traditional gloves, while favoring the
environment.
Showa launched its first single-use biodegradable glove in 2012 as a first step towards improving sustainability. The
aim of these gloves is to significantly reduce the impact of disposable gloves on the environment. Gradually, this
EBT technology is being expanded into more gloves, in order to meet today's demand without compromising tomorrow's
sustainability.
Below, we highlight these 3 biodegradable models, as they are certified for food, virus and chemical use.
